Vasilij Romanenkov was born in a small, remote Russian town with strong local traditions. As a teenager, he moved in with relatives near Moscow to train as a cabinetmaker. At the age of twenty-two, he began drawing.
The themes he explored relate to major stages of life, from maternity to funerals, often depicted within architectural structures. He
worked as a gardener in the park of a hotel in the Moscow suburbs until his death from a sudden, aggressive cancer.
