RODRIGUEZ miguel

[1926, Spain — 1987, France]

Miguel Rodriguez’s journey was shaped by wandering, ruptures, and the search for a place of belonging. At the age of eighteen, he left Spain to join the Spanish Legion in Morocco, which he soon abandoned. He then found refuge in the world of the circus, where he was employed as a general assistant. After his marriage, he settled in Calais.
Having long been affected by psychological difficulties, he was admitted to Saint-Venant Hospital. It was there that an intense artistic practice emerged: drawing and painting quickly became essential forms of expression for him. In 1983, an attempt was made to support his return to independent living through placement in social housing, but his health condition and refusal of medical treatment made this transition impossible. He died shortly afterwards.
Miguel Rodriguez’s work reveals a profound duality. On one side are luminous drawings, filled with energy and movement, which he willingly displayed on the hospital walls as signs of his presence in the world. On the other are darker compositions, inhabited by unsettling and ghostly forms, created during periods of exhaustion and kept hidden for a long time in his drawing folders.
Between radiance and darkness, appearance and withdrawal, his work reveals an intensely personal inner universe, where artistic practice becomes a space of transformation and survival.
