Annabel Romero’s childhood was shaped by profound family upheavals that left a lasting mark on her journey. From 1983 onward, she lived with her mother in Toulouse, where her mother devoted herself entirely to supporting her and seeking a means of expression for a child who was unable to communicate through speech.
Without institutional support, mother and daughter together created a space in which artistic practice became a language in its own right. From an early age, Annabel developed an intensely creative practice, exploring with boundless curiosity a wide range of materials: clay, wool, paper, fabrics, pencils, brushes, glue… Every element she encountered became an opportunity for transformation.
Her wool sculptures reveal remarkable technical mastery and meticulous attention to gesture. They invite an experience that goes beyond visual observation alone: they must sometimes be touched, explored through their folds and passages, and entered like labyrinths in order to discover the fragments and objects they conceal — small wool sculptures, pieces of dolls, or remnants of an intimate world.
Through this “other” language, Annabel Romero creates a unique space where artistic creation takes the place of words. Her work bears witness to a profound necessity: to give form to what cannot be spoken and to open a space of encounter with others through matter, gesture, and imagination.
