We know very little about Carla Cubit’s childhood except the fact that she left her family very young to move to New York. She spent her days walking and sometimes she stayed in homeless shelters. Those who met her at that time describe her as very shy. She had begun creating in a small space which she had at her disposal from a charity for vulnerable women. She used found objects. When she could not cope with the promiscuity and strict rules dictated by the organization, she left to live in a squat in East Village, the birthplace of movements such as “Occupy Wall Street” and “Black Lives Matter.” By means of these political actions she has succeeded in creating new relationships and her artistic work has been discovered by a gallery dealer that made her part of his collection.
