CRYSTIANO jesuys

[around 1950, Brazil — 2015, Brazil]

The biography of Jesuus Crystiano is highly uncertain; he is said to have grown up in Buerarema, where he was educated, before spending the rest of his youth in Rio de Janeiro. His life and work have only been documented since 2010. At that time, he was living on the streets of Ilhéus and was supported by his neighbors. It was then that a German hotel owner living in the region began to take an interest in the wall drawings he had made in abandoned buildings. Crystiano created hundreds of drawings in charcoal and pencil, as well as collages of photographs taken from newspapers, books, or found objects, in which the formal encounters between the elements in the photographs and his own drawings seem to trigger the creation of unreal worlds populated by composite beings and objects. One of his collages curiously includes a photograph of Chair with Fat (1963) by the German artist Joseph Beuys.
