Discovered by collector and gallery owner Henry Boxer, Wie ein Märchen (Like a Fairytale) is a seventy-two-page album, illustrated recto-verso, containing collages of photographs cut out of magazines and drawings. It may date from the 1960s, as it contains a 1964 calendar, and the author is German, perhaps from Berlin (a photograph of a Berlin beer parlor is included). This is the only information that we have. The seductive femme fatale, often dancing or at least in motion, is the predominant subject; there are many close-ups of shoes and stockings. The album’s title does not reflect its content, as some images are tinged with a degree of sexual violence. On the whole, however, the impression is more of an erotic fantasy than pornography.
