VAN VYVE elisabeth

[1957, Belgique]

As a child, Elisabeth Van Vyve experienced numerous developmental disorders, autism, and hearing problems that affected her speech; Elisabeth Van Vyve lives in her own world. Thanks to the dedication of her mother and the rest of her family, she learned to communicate through gestures, with a few sounds and a few words. It was first through drawing and writing that she managed to connect with her environment. Later, she discovered photography, which became a passion; she used disposable cameras. Over a period of 30 years, she documented the world around her in a methodical way. The body of work she assembled is considerable—thousands of photographs carefully arranged in small photo albums, stored on every available shelf in her apartment and later in her retirement home.
