After elementary school, Zbynek Semerák trained as a textile machine operator. His health, however, was too fragile to continue in this work, so he spent some time working as a painter in the local theater. Retired early in 1977, he then devoted himself entirely to drawing.
His works, executed in diluted India ink or pencil and often enhanced with gouache or scratched and repainted, evoke manuscripts with enigmatic writing. They draw on historical, architectural, and mythical themes, incorporate symbols from different cultures and religions.
