REMACLE christine

[1967, Vielsalm, Belgique — 2014, Libramont, Belgique]

A historic figure of La « S » Grand Atelier, Christine Remacle began her artistic practice in 1992, at the time when the workshops were just emerging. With a decidedly strong character, she approaches her pictorial work without concern for conventions.
Usually working on large-format sheets, she systematically begins by pouring acrylic paints or Ecoline inks onto them, mixing colors without any technical concern. A long pause follows—she daydreams or grumbles about some everyday detail—then, suddenly, she resumes her work and a drawing appears. A face emerges from the material, a screaming figure with an oversized mouth.
Throughout her artistic career, Remacle has created only a single collage, in which the face takes the form of a photograph cut from a magazine. This unique, surprising, and almost mysterious use of the photographic medium (as a new relationship to portraiture previously unseen in her work) is also striking for the unusual softness that seems to emanate from the features of the depicted subject.
