Very little is known about the life of John Podhorsky, a carpenter in California. In the 1950s, he was institutionalized at DeWitt State Hospital in Auburn, California. The few works known today come from the collection of Dr. Tarmo Pasto, a psychologist and artist who taught at California State College in Sacramento and was renowned for defending the work of Martín Ramírez, also a patient at the same hospital.
Podhorsky’s drawings combine hermetic writing and recurring motifs—animals, machines, houses, and bridges—often represented in pairs. The compositions frequently include female figures riding dappled horses and carrying bows and arrows.
