The laborer Johann Gittenberger was forced to abandon his work following a cerebral hemorrhage caused by severe alcoholism. In 1970, he was hospitalized and subsequently admitted to the Haus der Künstler in Gugging, then directed by Professor Leo Navratil. There, he drew for himself, without external prompting. His work seems to follow two main paths: one depicts city-like plans and roads, accompanied by texts and notes; the other presents portraits or bodies, often placed within drawn frames. In 1975, having become too frail, Gittenberger was transferred to a nursing home, where he passed away a year later.
