EGEA jose manuel

[1988, Madrid, Espagne]

From early childhood, José Manuel Egea developed a passion for Marvel Comics superheroes, particularly Jack Russell and Hulk, the green giant he enjoys imitating. The transformation of man into beast, of a human being into a powerful, terrifying, and indestructible creature fascinates him. It lies at the heart of his work, produced since 2010 within the creative center “debajo del sombrero” (under the hat), which welcomes people with intellectual disabilities. Egea likes to connect with the “wolf side”—as he calls it—that resides in the appearance of every individual. He knows it well through his episodes, during which he needs to howl to calm down and tear apart all kinds of things, especially his clothes. A large part of his work consists of altering photographs selected from magazines, which he scribbles over with a ballpoint pen until the portrait, buried under the darkness of the ink, disappears, giving way to the monster.
