Born into a working-class family with complex multicultural roots, Christophe Barcella developed from an early age an intimate connection with memory, origins, and territories. As a child, he explored the world through illustrated encyclopedias, fascinated by maps, civilizations, and historical figures. In the privacy of his room, he embarked on imaginary investigations across space and time, driven by curiosity and a desire to uncover the traces of the past.
His passion for archaeology and family genealogy gradually led him toward drawing imaginary cities. He invented architectures, created fictional territories, and recorded his visions in notebooks. His plans expanded into vast ideal metropolises, patiently assembled as these imagined worlds continued to grow.
This impulse to “map” became a form of meditation. During adolescence, painting transformed these maps into sensitive relief-like landscapes, where the city became an inner space shaped by memory, utopia, and imagination.
As an adult, balancing scientific rationality with artistic exploration, Christophe Barcella pursued a career as an international consultant in pharmaceutical research while continuing his creative practice. His urban cartographies reveal an ongoing quest: exploring the connections between human beings, territories, and possible worlds.
