What little is known about this object—a kind of framed box—comes from the writing it contains. The label serving as a title reads in English: “Umatilla Indian Reservation / Mama, Leo and Leo’s baby.” On the back, one can also read: “Mrs Orr and her student Leo 1956. Umatilla reservation Leo’s homemade doll.”
It may be assumed that the author of this object (at least of the label) is Mrs. Orr’s child, while Mrs. Orr herself had as a pupil young Leo, a Native American from the Umatilla Reservation. Located in northeastern Oregon, east of Pendleton, this reservation was established following the treaty of June 9, 1855, concluded between the United States and the Walla, Cayuse, and Umatilla tribes.
