Little is known about this collection—around three hundred drawings—found at a flea market by an antique dealer in Barcelona. Some of them are “signed” on the back “E. S. G.”, although the meaning of these initials remains unknown. Most were made on the lids of cigarillo boxes produced in Spain (“Para la renta de tabacos de España”) or in the Canary Islands (“Labor de Canarias”), but sometimes also on boxes of sleeping pills from the Roche laboratory, manufactured in Switzerland and distributed in Spain.
