This collection brings together “failed” or manipulated photographs: flare effects creating a luminous halo or veil that evoke divine apparitions; double exposures, making it easier to introduce strange, ghostly figures. The freedom offered by photographic techniques makes it possible to depict the marvelous—previously represented only through painting or engraving—thus giving it a realistic form, much like in the films of Georges Méliès.
