HUGO séverine

[1981, Malmedy, Belgique]

Séverine Hugo joined La « S » Grand Atelier in 2015. Without showing any real inclination toward artistic creation, she nevertheless wished to attend the drawing workshop to benefit from its particular atmosphere, as well as its unique approach to fragility. Her fear of judgment preventing her from feeling entitled to create herself, she initially simply observed the practice of the artists around her. The workshop as a place of emulation and the climate of kindness that emanates from it gradually soothed her fears, which slowly faded to make way for a genuine need for expression through drawing. A graphic coherence quickly emerged across her productions. Séverine Hugo enjoys layering ultra-fine felt-tip lines in a repetitive gesture, drawing circles that she often calls “my rings of Saturn.” She is interested in all kinds of supports, particularly already handwritten papers and old photographs with rigid subjects and static postures. The circle often takes shape around a specific element of the image, like a target, in a way surrounding a hidden detail that she chooses to reveal.
