MARKOVÁ Cecílie

1911-1998 — Kyjov — Autriche-Hongrie / Tchéquie

Of Slovak origin, Cecílie Marková grew up in a modest family. After training as a milliner and working in a clothing shop, she was introduced to Spiritualism by her husband. On 18 October 1938 she began to draw; after her husband’s sudden death in 1940, drawing became a way for her to communicate with the dead and give meaning to her life.
Initially working in graphite and later adding coloured pencil, she expanded her practice in the 1960s to include tempera and oil. She created mediumistic portraits, astral landscapes and cosmic visions. Preceded by a period of meditation, her drawings were produced through an automatic and spontaneous process, nourished by local traditions and Spiritualist imagery.
