Since 1997, Yumiko Kawaï has attended the Yamanami workshop in Konan (Shiga Prefecture), where she practices weaving and embroidery. Her embroideries consist of “circles.” After drawing an initial circle on the fabric and determining their number and approximate arrangement, she threads her needle and forms their outlines using a unique sewing technique. She works on several “circles” simultaneously. As layers of embroidery are added, they rise like mountains, thus generating a three-dimensional work. Kawaï may spend several months on a single piece.
