Irène Gérard comes from a small town located in the heart of the German-speaking community of Belgium. She joined the workshops of La « S » in Vielsalm in 2007, with coloring books as her only artistic reference. Having quickly become familiar with painting and pastel drawing, she began reproducing, in large formats and usually on a uniform background, painted or photographic portraits that she fully reinterprets. For the Ave Luïa project, she created representations of cardinals and nuns whose expressive strength, even severity, recalls certain Renaissance paintings.
