A gardener in a castle, Anton Dobay suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of sixty-five, resulting in irreversible damage. He was admitted to the psychiatric hospital of Gugging Psychiatric Clinic, where he remained until his death. Drawing quickly became his sole occupation. Supported by Professor Leo Navratil, who provided him with reproductions of artworks, Anton Dobay drew inspiration from them to develop a highly personal body of work, using oil pastels or colored pencils.
