YOSHIKAWA hideak

[1970, Préfecture De Shiga, Japon]

Since 1988, when he became a resident of the Yamanami workshop in Konan, Shiga Prefecture, Hideaki Yoshikawa has meticulously and tirelessly dug holes into clay using wooden chopsticks. Each opening represents an eye, a mouth, and a nose. The resulting objects—sometimes featuring hundreds of faces—are then fired following Japanese ceramic tradition. Yoshikawa works with his face very close to the sculpture, barely ten centimeters away. He also draws, slowly and carefully over several days, creating faces as well.
