Afflicted with serious mental health issues since childhood, Harald Stoffers was institutionalized at age 22. There, he began writing simple words on small pieces of paper which he distributed. Over time, his work evolved: he began composing much longer letters addressed to his “dear mother” (“Liebe Mutti”), with the text arranged to form lines meticulously drawn like musical staffs. The formats of his works vary widely, some exceeding six meters. Since 2001, Stoffers has worked diligently at the Atelier Der Villa, now Galerie Der Villa, a Hamburg-based art facility.
