Aurie Ramirez joined the Creative Growth Art Center in 1997. Her work draws both from memories of her childhood in the Philippines—notably through traditional costumes—as well as from pop culture and references to images from another era. Her watercolors and ink works unfold a dreamlike universe where 18th-century dandyism, neo-Victorian settings, psychedelic accents, glam rock sensuality, and an iconography infused with punk fetishism and raw eroticism intermingle. She explores themes such as sexuality, fashion, and violence.
A prolific artist, Ramirez fills her sketchbooks with dozens of compositions in a single day.
