Elayne Goodman was born near Tupelo, the small hometown of Elvis Presley, in the middle of nowhere… She worked for a time as a nurse. Alongside her professional life, she produced a considerable body of work on the farm that has belonged to her family for six generations. A farm filled with objects accumulated over decades, an Ali Baba’s cave overflowing with salvaged materials from which she draws her inspiration. Mixing fabrics, beads, embroidery, and ceramics, Goodman’s practice deeply reflects the culture of the southern United States. Passionate about rock music and especially a fan of Elvis Presley, the artist created numerous pieces featuring her idol through photographs. In the work The First Breakfast, Christ and all the apostles have the face of Elvis, while Judas is represented by a lookalike of the rock star.
