MILLIONS susie

[1958, Niles, Michigan, États-Unis]

Suzie Millions was introduced to art by her grandfather, a self-taught wood sculptor who loved the mountains; she also attended an art school for a time. From childhood, she drew pastel portraits of people around her. She was nourished by the blues broadcast on local radio stations and would draw inspiration in her creations from this music as well as from the culture surrounding it.
As an adult, Millions moved to Memphis with a musician and, for a time, opened a recording studio. She then moved to New Orleans, where she discovered reverse glass painting and traditional “Memory Jugs.” While her work is part of this popular tradition, she developed a highly personal style, for example with her cigar boxes decorated with collages depicting the lives of pioneers of American music from the 1950s and 1960s. Millions currently lives near Asheville, married to a rock’n’roll musician.
