Does a totalitarian system such as the one that prevails in Cuba encourage forms of transgression and disobedience? Most Art Brut creators living under authoritarian regimes do not consciously seek to break rules or conventions, nor do they aim to challenge political authority. Nevertheless, the cultural signs conveyed through their works reveal a remarkable ability to grasp, with great acuity and often unwittingly, certain elements of the history and culture to which they belong.
