The spiritualist artist Josef Kotzian, trained as a machinist, lived in Ostrava, on the border between Moravia and Silesia. Some publications of the time mention his drawings that he signed “Solferino” and showed in group exhibitions. Without exception, all are precisely dated (day, month, year) and sometimes accompanied by texts. The imaginative monumentality of his flowers, with their fleshy, disturbing leaves, sometimes tiny, the formal sophistication and inventiveness of his works make Josef Kotzian one of the most important spiritualist artists in his country.
