The body of work devoted to “Brut Photography” was first presented at the Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles in 2019 under the title Photo | Brut. Collection Bruno Decharme & Compagnie, and subsequently at the American Folk Art Museum in New York in 2021. This publication and the accompanying exhibition extend that initial exploration and seek to reveal further facets of Brut Photography. They survey a field that has received little attention within Art Brut studies and open onto innovative photographic practices and alternative uses of the medium, renewing our understanding of photography itself. Through photographs, photomontages and photocollages, these creators—generally self-taught—reveal their personal universes through works produced outside conventional artistic circuits.
