Some artists seem to have been chosen by a mysterious force to carry out an impossible mission: to save humanity from disasters—whether imaginary or real—, from present and future catastrophes, and from all kinds of afflictions. They sometimes see themselves as the Messiah or obey obscure injunctions. They base their creations on belief systems constructed according to their own logic. Could Art Brut artists not be regarded as a kind of shaman, engaging in rituals of a private nature that nevertheless concern public affairs?
