Living in Osaka, Kunizo Matsumoto is responsible for dishwashing in his family’s restaurant. In parallel, he participated in a first creative workshop for people with mental disabilities between 1985 and 1988, where he became interested in notes written by staff members, which he attempted to reproduce, thus developing an original form of writing. Since 1995, he has continued his creative work in another art workshop for people with mental disabilities.
Matsumoto compulsively collects all kinds of printed materials (Kabuki theater brochures, exhibition catalogues, guidebooks, etc.), filling his room with them — and no one is allowed to touch them. Illiterate, he succeeded in creating his own language. Sometimes he copies passages from Kabuki plays. Once the page is filled, he occasionally continues writing in the air, dance taking over. In the evening, after all family members are asleep, he writes on the restaurant calendar or fills notebooks in his room.
