We know very little about Albino Braz’ life before his confinement to the psychiatric hospital of Juqueri for schizophrenia, in 1934. Apparently, he was of Italian origin and had been married. His medical records indicate that he began drawing upon his arrival; that – often restless, expansive and irritable – he asserted himself to be the descendant of some illustrious men and women and boasted of a rich intellectual activity despite his rudimentary education. His drawings depict human figures, and glancing sideways, their extremely tense bodies seem forever ready to jump at our throats.
