Yohann Goetzmann collects, assembles and creates compositions from images drawn from the contemporary media landscape. Through a collage practice based on accumulation and recomposition, he brings together screenshots from television game shows, numbers, letters, diagrams, transport network maps, portraits of celebrities and television personalities.
Each image is carefully selected: the artist knows their origins, contexts and histories. More than the archive itself, it is the printed image that marks the completion of his creative process, giving material form to these fragments of collective memory.
Fascinated by series, routes and networks, Yohann Goetzmann finds in these structured systems a sense of orientation and transforms them into visual compositions. After several stays in care institutions, he joined La Pommeraie in Belgium, where the discovery of coloured pencils opened a new chapter in his artistic practice.
In 2014, his work was discovered by the BrutPop association during the filming of the documentary Musique Brute, handicap et contre-culture for France Télévisions. Since then, his collages have been presented in various venues and exhibitions.
Through the collection of images, media memory and the construction of a personal visual language, Yohann Goetzmann’s work reveals a unique way of inhabiting and organising the contemporary world.
