Yumiko Kawai has been weaving and making embroidery at the Yamanami art studio since 1997. Her first works of embroidery were fish, squares or triangles, but recently she has been working exclusively on circles. She sketches out their contours in advance and then creates layer upon layer of embroidery. The threads overlap, causing the originally flat circle to contract and rise in an arc. These mounds are reminiscent of breasts, but also of mountains or shapes found in Zen gardens. She spends months working on just one embroidery.
