Gérard Schreiner was one of the first art dealers to take an interest in Art Brut. After practicing his profession for a time in Basel, he moved to New York in the early 1980s and organized one of the very first commercial exhibitions bringing together high-quality Art Brut works; it was a failure. Today, some of those pieces have reappeared on the market and sell for “golden prices.” When Gérard Schreiner decided to leave behind the frenzy of the art world to live on an island in Brazil surrounded by his animals, he sold his collection to Bruno Decharme and used the proceeds from the sale to plant thousands of coconut trees.
