Donald Mitchell is the third child in an African-American family of eleven, with whom he has always lived in San Francisco. Since 1986, he has attended the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland.
If an initial phase of his work consisted of drawing figures that he covered with hatching and cross-outs until they were obscured, his later compositions adopted the opposite logic, aiming to release forms from the saturated space surrounding them. His drawings gradually transformed into airy, dancing crowds.
