Although often socially or psychologically marginalized, Art Brut creators maintain a genuine connection with the world, albeit of a particular kind. Whether untouched by artistic culture or not, they draw upon what surrounds them—cultural, historical, and even political events—closely intertwining these with their own personal histories. Hence the appearance in their works of collages, newspaper clippings, advertising extracts, or quotations from books. Do they find confirmation of their own experiences in the world around them? Or, like whistleblowers, do they point to the symptoms of our societies?
