Shuji has been attending the Suzukake art studio since he was 18 years old. His drawings are of ordinary objects arranged on a desk: vases, soda bottles, pitchers, balls of yarn, brushes, and more. First, he covers the paper in black or colored pastel paint, and then he uses a rubber erases to lift the final shape from the monochrome background. He sometimes works as long as three hours without interruption. Once the work is done, a broad smile spreads across his face, he stands up quickly as if breaking the surface after a long deep-sea dive, and leaves the studio with an expression of relief.
