A long-term client of the Kobo Syu, Shibata takes a special interest in drawing soap. His approach to work has not changed over time. He tends to have a game of Othello open next to him, and briefly enjoys the sound the tiles make when they strike against each other. Only after having satisfied his senses does he focus on his drawings, in which he returns again and again to the dense but transient texture of soap. The paper looks as if it were slowly being covered in fine soap bubbles, foam, spirals and little pathways, either in colorful layers or in foaming fields of just one color.
