Johann Gittenberger was first a worker, before having to abandon his profession because of severe drinking problems, which were at the origin of a cerebral hemorrhage. In 1970, he was hospitalized and then joined the House of Artists of Gugging, then headed by Pr Navratil. There, he drew for himself, without external incentives. His artistic production seems to follow two distinct directions : first, there are plans of cities or roads mixed with writings and notes. Second, portraits or bodies often placed in drawn frames. In 1975, physically too fragile, he was transferred to a nursing home where he died one year later.
