LECLERCQ jean

1951 — Région Liégeoise — Belgique

Jean Leclercq is a visual artist living near the psychiatric hospital of Lierneux, which has been following him since 1972. A solitary artist since childhood, he one day discovered La « S » Grand Atelier through someone in his circle and joined it in 2008, regularly attending its spaces to nourish, promote, and preserve his work. Although he explores sewing and engraving, his universe remains centered on drawing, his preferred medium for expressing his passion for comic books. Using albums found at flea markets, he reproduces in large formats his favorite panels (“Lucky Luke,” “Michel Vaillant,” “Captain America”) before coloring them. Gradually, he has extended his practice to various supports, such as leather and textiles, in order to explore his relationship with comics in different ways. The collective project Ave Luïa revived many childhood memories linked to catechism, which he expressed in painting through a series of portraits of nuns and members of the clergy.
