From 1995 to 2011, Derkenne attended the La “S” Grand Atelier art studio in Vielsalm. His gouaches and pen drawings consist of concentric circles sketched in thousands of strokes that depict eyes, noses and mouths. Using these simple visual tools, Derkenne managed to express a surprisingly wide range of emotions. The seemingly monstrous surface hides a sensitive palette of feelings: amazement, mistrust, confusion, shame, nervousness, fear, and horror.
