Born outside any artistic lineage, Art Brut works are, by nature, orphaned. Yet some are truly so: the nameless ones, the anonymous works. Most Art Brut creations are unsigned; their authors are unable to assume the position of a “social” subject, let alone that of an artist. The works remain with them, confined to their homes or hospitals, hidden away by medical secrecy in a suitcase or a locker. We generally know the name of their creator only through the intervention of a “mediator.”
