A gardener at a castle, at the age of sixty-five Anton Dobay suffered a cerebral hemorrhage resulting in irreversible brain damage. He was hospitalized at the psychiatric hospital Gugging where he remained until his death. Drawing quickly became his sole occupation. Supported by Prof. Navratil, who provided him with reproductions of works of art, Anton Dobay developed highly personal work, in crayon or colored pencils.
